Two gaming laptops can carry the same GPU name and still perform very differently. Here are the seven specs that decide how a gaming laptop actually plays, and the questions to ask before you buy one in the UAE.
1. GPU tier and power (TGP)
The graphics chip matters most for gaming. With NVIDIA's RTX™ 50 Series, the laptop maker sets how much power the GPU may use. An RTX™ 5070 Laptop GPU, for example, can be configured anywhere from 50W to 100W. A higher TGP with good cooling means higher sustained frame rates. Check the TGP on the spec sheet or ask us.
2. Cooling
Thin laptops look great but have less room for fans and heat pipes. In Dubai's summer heat, strong cooling helps a laptop hold its boost clocks. Look for large rear/side vents and reviews that test long gaming sessions, not only short benchmarks.
3. Refresh rate vs. resolution
Tom's Hardware notes that you often have to "pick resolution or speed": the fastest panels are usually 1080p. For competitive shooters, 144Hz–240Hz matters more than 4K. For story games and creative work, a 1440p (QHD/WQXGA) panel at 165Hz–240Hz is a great balance.
4. RAM: 16GB minimum
Tom's Hardware's advice is to "go for 16GB on a gaming PC." 32GB helps if you stream, edit video or keep many browser tabs open while gaming. Check whether the RAM is upgradeable later.
5. Storage
Modern games often exceed 100GB each. A 1TB NVMe SSD is the comfortable minimum; 512GB fills up quickly. A second M.2 slot makes future upgrades easy.
6. CPU
High-performance HX processors, such as the Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 processor 255HX (20 cores) and Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 processor 275HX (24 cores), help in CPU-heavy games, streaming and content creation. H-series chips are fine for most gamers on a budget.
7. Operating system and keyboard
Many UAE models ship with FreeDOS (no Windows) to keep the price down. Budget for a Windows 11 licence if needed, or choose a model with Windows pre-installed. Also check the keyboard layout: English only or Arabic/English.
